Gowtham Vasudev Menon – The brand stands for some taut thrillers and feel-good romantic movies. If you’re gonna walk in for ‘Nadunissi Naaygal’ with such standard of beliefs, it’s going to be a disappointment. Much prior to analyzing the movie, we have a short message from Gowtham Menon about his movie following which we will a crisp analysis of the movie
“Nadunisi Naaygal is new age Tamil cinema. I have tried to break the rules of regular Tamil cinema with this film. It's also in a genre that is new to me. It's experimental in the sense that it is a dark and disturbing film. It's a contrast to all my earlier films in every sense. In a way, it's an announcement that I am always looking to break away from a style that I am known for and create a new style for myself. Anything experimental and new will always be received with bouquets and brickbats and I am at a stage in my career where I fully understand that. I stand by this film with a lot of conviction. It’s not a film that you can walk out of saying that you loved it unless you are fond of this genre of films. It's an experience, that's all it is. And the last frame before the direction card will tell you why I decided to make this film. Your encouragement will hopefully pave the way for a new style in Tamil cinema and a new breed of Tamil filmmakers.â€Â
- Gautham Vasudev Menon
The film has a very simple storyline. It revolves around a psychotic person Veera (Veera) possessed with multi-personality order. He unravels his mind that brings various characters together.
To start off, Gowtham Menon needs special mention for having made such an experimental movie. Having delivered back to back hit movies, no filmmaker would risk themselves at such a critical juncture of his career. But the way he tries projecting the story is so hard to accept. It’s worth appreciating his way of projection through non-involvement of background score and songs, but that’s too odd for the audiences to accept.
On the performance, Veera is good at places, but overreacts as a stereotypical psychotic character. Sameera Reddy has nothing to perform as she keeps running throughout the second half. Deva performing the role of ACP Arjun doesn’t fit the space.
On the whole, ‘Nadunissi Naaygal’ is a good attempt by Gowtham Menon, but it is too hard to reach mass audiences.
Verdict: For miniscule audiences
