Mehaj may not sound like haute couture, but it is a boutique that holds promise!
Named after its owner, Mehaj Esmail, it is choc-a-bloc with dressy evening wear, party couture and bridal wear. The designer, Esmail draws his inspiration from the likes of Roberto Cavalli and closer to home, J.J.Vallaya. He shares his mentors’ philosophy to aim for perfection, whether it is the cut, the choice of fabric, the embellishment or the silhouette!

Mehaj uses sheer georgettes and chiffons, soft satin, flowing crepes and figure-flattering lycra. The embellishments can range from delicate lace, beads, translucent tubes and embroidery. Neat pleats on soft silk add texture and character to the ensembles. Don’t go expecting a huge, posh store. This boutique is more European in style, small and cozy. It is not stacked with merchandise, but displays its in-house couture collection artistically. You will find a good selection of salwar kameez, churidars, tunics, leggings, tights, tops and kurtis.

If you are heading for a cocktail and wondering where to get that elusive lil’ black dress, hop into Mehaj! They have a fine range of dresses to suit the Indian silhouette, in western cuts and European colours. If there’s a wedding in the family, just pop into Mehaj and get yourself a zardosi fitted lehnga, an exquisite embroidered choli or a saree sprinkled with shimmering sequins.
