If you were to mix tea gardens, the heady scent of spice, wild life, dense forests and spectacular views, in all probability you could be heading for Munnar.
Munnar nestles cozily in the Idukki district of Kerala, perched at about 6000’ standing at the confluence of three gushing mountain streams viz. Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala. Essentially the area is a gigantic tea estate, as you enter Munnar, you are greeted by vast carpets of manicured tea estates melting into the horizon. Munnar is renowned for the Neelakurinji - an unusual flower which blossoms only once in twelve years. It blooms in a clustered fashion with pale blue petals which gradually turn into purplish blue when in full bloom.
Mistress of Spices would be an apt description of Munnar. A wide variety of spices scents the air of Munnar including cardamom, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla pods and cloves. However, pepper reigns as king in the region. The area is home to turmeric and about twelve varieties of ginger. To imbibe the beauty of Munnar one has to spend time outdoors, in close proximity with nature. You could go hiking, walking, trekking, biking, mountain climbing, picnicking or boating. Spend a lazy afternoon fishing for trout, enjoy the spectacular beauty of Nyayamakad waterfalls or go for an elephant ride! Other local attractions include Echo Point, Mattupetti Dam and Photo Point.
The nearest airport is at Cochin and the closest rail head is Ernakulam, Munnar lies about 160 km from Coimbatore. The best season to visit is between August to May. Remember to pack in your walking shoes, some good books, warm clothes and rain gear! Munnar is often referred to as the Kashmir of the South for its unparalleled natural beauty.
