Of course you’ve heard of Madras, but how many of you out there have heard of Sadras?
If you love a scoop of history to sweeten your getaway plans, then this could be for you! Barely an hour away from Madras (now Chennai) and 17 km away from Mahabalipuram stand the ruins and ramparts of a Dutch colony at Sadras (originally Sadurangapattinam).
Plan a day trip from Chennai, to explore the misty past. Ideally start out from Chennai after lunch and arrive at Sadras by early evening, to soak in the breathtaking view, as the rays of the setting sun bathe the fort in a golden glow. Wander around the fort and the village, and saunter across to the beach nearby at twilight.
Remember to carry some sandwiches and water with you, for this lesser known getaway doesn’t offer much in terms of food and drink. Of course on your way back to Chennai, you can always grab a bite at one of the zillion restaurants and eateries that dot the ECR.
Way back in the 17th Century the city was known for its fine muslin and lustrous pearls. When the Dutch sailed the high seas, they obviously dropped anchor at this lucrative settlement, and went on to build a magnificent fort, overlooking the sea. It housed large granaries, bastions, stables, imposing ramparts and elephant mounts.
The cemetery houses tombs which date back to 1670 and the tombstones are emblazoned with distinguished coat of arms. A secret chamber stands close by to the cemetery. In 1818 the British defeated the Dutch at the Battle of Sadras and took possession of the fort, bringing it under the East India Company.
A visit to Sadras can make for an enriching half-day getaway!
