Spicy Cuisine from “Amravathi"

If you live in / are visiting Chennai, and looking for some spicy Andhra food, you should head to “Amravathiâ€Â

Amravathi dishes out spicy Andhra cuisine, just as its served back home, nd probably the best in the city. The fact that Amravathi has been around for over 30 years, stands testament to the fact that the food here is not only authentic but really good and consistent! The décor is unpretentious, for the accent here is on food. The service may not be immaculate but it is quick. The surroundings are clean and the interiors are Spartan. A word of caution: visit the restaurant only if you can handle truly hot, spicy food!

If you would like to taste a bit of everything Andhra, then opt for the “meals†(as they are known in this part of the country) served on freshly washed banana leaves! You can tuck into unlimited quantities of rice, rasam, sambar and other dishes. Of course the accompaniments too are unlimited from pungent gun powder and fried papads to gongura chutney, avakkai pickle, pappuloppodi. Remember to have some yogurt at the end of the meal, to cool your system down, after all that spice and al things nice!

Amravathi is also about tasty non-vegetarian fare. The in-house specialties include vanjaram (fish) fry, mutton / chicken biryani, brain masala, liver masala, chicken curry, prawns masala, mutton sukka and spicy crab. Most of these go best with white rice or dosas. Don’t expect much in terms of dessert, for the restaurant is limited in the selection, with only gulab jamuns, basundi (rabdi) and ice cream. Top it all up with a beeda (paan) for the complete experience!
