What started out as a small road side shop where you can stop, get a bite and move on has now mushroomed into one of the most happening and busiest restaurants in Chennai. Murugan Idli Shop (MIS) is a south Indian’s paradise come true.

One can sense a Tamil wedding kind of atmosphere in this shop – with men standing with vessels of sambhar, chutneys, ghee, gun (chilli) powder, ready to serve you at the blink of an eye; always with a smile. There are multiple outlets of Murugan Idly Shop in the city (T Nagar, G. N. Chetty road etc); but my personal favourite is the Besant Nagar one.

Sitting at the corner of the corniche road of the Besant Nagar beach, it is the ideal destination for a leisurely evening. Lit by attractive yellow and red lights, this place offers a great view of the beach while you gobble up your dosas or idlis. A comment must be made about the idlis – they as soft as a feather and when combined with the green (coriander) or tomato chutney, makes you wonder why you ever skipped your idly breakfast at home! Another hot favourite is their vadai – made from fresh oil and finely ground flour, tastes like a piece of heaven in your mouth! And if you are a coffee person, you must have their filter coffee served in a typical tumbler to finish your meal!

The amazing fact about this place is that it is like a served buffet – you can eat as much as you want and that too with people serving you at the turn of your head. And no matter how much you eat, it is amazing value for money and hardly costs you a noticeable amount!

The Idlies at Murugan Idly Shop are some of the worst idlies I have had. They are not soft they are just half steamed and there are like chemicals which go into the process. I would trust Kaiyendhi Bhavans(Road Side Eateries) to make better idlies. BTW why do you have a photo of Two Vadas and a bowl of sambhar for Murugan IDLY Shop. Where are the IDLIES!!!

Whats wrong with the vadai pictures Ramesh. Remember, Kumaran Silks also sells cotton sarees :P

Yeah Kumaran Silks Sells Cotton Sarees but we are not talking about Sarees here are we? We are talking Idlies. I wanna see some Idlies. BTW do you work for these guys?

Dear Author, I understand that you wanted to say nice things about MIS. but here is what I think. The Besant nagar MIS is not " the ideal destination for a leisurely evening". It is terrible place, which has rude gate-keeper who would not assit with parking and snobby waiters, and the food is ok, its what I would eat if I am starving and none of the places around are open. Nothing special. BTW is dirty also, I wonder if it even meets the FCi''s Hygine guidelines etc. And "offers a great view of the beach while you gobble up your dosas or idlis" ??? what happened to t he shops and settlements right opposite MIS.. I don''t think you can even see the beach from MIS. MIS needs to work on a lot of things, if they should live up to what you have written. -J

I dont think the person who wrote this article has visited MIS. Because i wont be getting attention, no will come and attend you, you want to wait atleast 30 mins to draw the attention of the waiter. And the idly price is too costly. And Vadai wont appear so crispy as photographed in the article

OK agreed Pizza hut serves Lasagna but do they advertise with pictures of lasagna. NO! They advertise with Photos of Pizzas :p Anyways Murugan Idly shops Idlies really Suck So thats why they have shown vadas instead of idlies. But someone earlier mentioned that the Vadas are stale too. They are stored in a hot box.

God. Undiluted commercial advt. south Indian''s food paradise!!!! Give us a break. a very ordinary joint which gained in popularity due to the mere fact that it could serve piping hot food in a reasonably clean place to late night drunkards is now a PARADISE. The same drunkards didnt have a clue about good veggie places in chennai suggested to their gullible families about the only place that they know ( apart from midnight express/samcos of the world) and presto You have a great Paradise that is born. Average tasting food. very average interiors. mediocre service. Great locations..........the south indian Mac
