A legend in Bombay, Sukh Sagar is now a brand name in the restaurant business with their focus on good food and quality service.

I had always wanted to dine at Sukh Sagar’s Chennai outlet ever since I had been to their Mumbai branch. Founded by Mr.Suresh Poojari in 1962, Sukh Sagar believes in retaining the traditional flavors of the North-Indian cuisine. With a wide assortment of dishes to choose from, we chose the mixed vegetable patty for starters. Looking close in resemblance to a masala vadai, it was absolutely lip-smacking with its tangy green chutney.

For the main course, we opted for the kulcha and butter naan from the bread section. The kulcha was a tad more elastic than expected, and the naan was swathed in more butter than necessary, making my waistline conscious friend, squirm in her seat. We teamed the breads with Paneer Bhurji and Dal Makhani, both were at their authentic best. Even though these side dishes are predominant in most menus, what sets them apart at Sukh Sagar is their flavor which is enhanced so intricately that you can taste every spice used in their making. Moving on to the rice bowl, we had the Kashmiri Pulao which was sweeter than anticipated, but it went down well with the mixed-vegetable pickle and masala papad.

How can a meal be complete without a sweet finale? The kesar kulfi and the malai kulfi were delectable. I would return to Sukh Sagar just for that. Apart from this, you could choose from their own range of Sukh Sagar’s own brand of ice-creams, shakes and juices in a host of flavors.

On the downside, their ambience and furniture could be maintained better, and the service could be spruced up a bit. It took a long while for the food to arrive and we were left staring at our neighbour’s table, dangerously close to ours. I would definitely recommend, you make a reservation before you go, because this place can get really crowded with their cramped parking space and lack of a waiting area.
