Drum Dances, rare golu dolls and more...

Feel like celebrating Dussehra with a lot of colour, craft and dance?

You might then drive down to DakshinaChitra on the scenic East Coast Road. The old world architecture of DakshinaChitra will be the backdrop for the highly charged Koraga tribal drum dance native to the west-coast region of Karnataka.

Tribal dancers from these regions will be dancing to the Kaddayi, their traditional drum, a percussion instrument used in their rituals and dances. DakshinaChitra looks set to reverberate with drum beats, because there would be 8 to 16 dancers beating the drums and dancing at the venue. You might also like the strains of the flute like Oonte, the wind instrument that leads and harmonizes the drumbeats, while the cymbals effect will be brought in by the Koraga’s ‘keisaala’. The sounds of the small drum Chende would also be reverberating in the air. This group performing at DakshinaChitra is a seasoned one, having performed at Udupi’s Tulu Festival and more importantly, the National Tribal Festival held at Mysore.

Besides soaking in the rhythms of this percussion ensemble, you might also like to pick up the colourful bags, stoles and other items crafted by Karnataka’s Lambadi women. Added shopping attractions at the venue are paper-mache and kondapalli dolls, just in time for our golu season. And of course, don’t miss the golu showcased by the heritage houses at DakshinaChitra. Figuring in DakshinaChitra’s Golu would be rare dolls, some of which are over a century old.

Dates: 2 to 10nd October (Tuesday holiday), 10.00 am to 6.00pm
Venue: DakshinaChitra, East Coast Road.
