Saree Couture …

Sarees are sarees. What can change that?

The saree boutique in Chennai, christened a simple “Usha’s” has changed that definition!

Stop a while to admire the façade of this boutique. It is not on high street, and no, it does not boast of the minimalistic look like most do, these days! It stands for tradition and ethnicity, just like its sarees. Sturdy Chettinad pillars, a sloping tiled roof and an antique look beckon. Choicest pieces of antique furniture lie scattered, even as the walls are dotted with timeless Tanjore paintings. The “mandap” in the store is where you can sit and mull over which saree to buy, over a cup of steaming filter coffee.

The range of sarees is as diverse as the personality of the lady behind it. Rummage through the traditional Kanjeevarams, exquisite Kantha embroidered sarees, colourful Pochampallis, Kalamkaris and Uppadas. Run your hands over silk and cotton Bandhinis in vibrant colours or the zari encrusted gharcholas.

They also stock ensembles, interesting cholis and fabrics. These are exclusively designed by Usha, and woven for the boutique. Usha’s is not only about shopping. It is also about women connecting with each other, taking time to see what suits them best, placing an order for an exquisite Tanjore painting or just unwinding! You could call it a lounge if you want….for that’s exactly what you feel like doing once you enter Usha’s lounge around!
