A play written by Rabindranath Tagore, adapted into Tamil by P. Rajagopal and Hanne M. de Bruin and played by a group of very talented youngsters from The Kattaikuttu Young Professionals Company.
The story line is very simple. King Govindan and his wife Gunavati don’t have children. The King loves his nephew and wants to make him the crown prince. The Queen Gunavati is in the meantime asking the Goddess Kali to bless her with a child. She tells the priest Raghupathi that she will offer some blood sacrifices to appease Goddess Kali.
In the meantime King Govindan passes an order which bans all blood sacrifices. He says that Mother Kali has asked him to stop all blood sacrifices in the Kingdom.
While there is a lot of opposition from everyone including the queen, the King says he will not revoke it at any cost. But the Queen is now thinking of giving a Royal Sacrifice, who else but the crown prince Dhruva himself.
In the end the King discovers what has been going on and stops the sacrifice and saves Dhruva.
Each of the characters is well defined and each one sang, acted and danced in a well co-ordinated manner which shows the kind of effort that has been put in by these young artists. Priest Raghupathi, his adopted son Jaising, Princess Gunavati, King Govindan, Crown Prince Druva, the Ministers, the General, the Kings Brother, The Jester, the peasants, Goddess Kali, The Live Musicians, each one performed to the T. It was a dance of Colours with a great theme.
A great evening at the Alliance. It was nice to see young people as part of the audience. Because traditional art forms like the Kattaikuttu have to be enjoyed by one and all as it has a great message for everyone.

An Artist
It was an interesting play. They all performed very well. There was even a 7 year old in the audience who kept asking doubts about the storyline. Entertaining Evening. I liked it.
