When it came to building our new house, my husband took charge of almost everything. But when it came to the kitchen, well, yours truly was entrusted with this humungous task on account of expertise, experience and you know…

So, I trooped off to see all the modular kitchens available in Chennai. I needed a kitchen that would fit into my lifestyle, it should look smashing, it should be practical, functional and there should be no wastage of space. Of course it should also be well within my husband’s budget! I’m not going to ramble about all the kitchens I saw. But let me tell you about what really caught my fancy…

I walked into the Alno store on Kasturi Ranga Road and was pleasantly surprised at what all is available in Chennai! The store was warm and inviting with kitchens in hues ranging from burgundy and azure blue to buttercup yellow, sun-drenched orange, deep chocolate, mystical black and of course, the essential pristine white. The colour palette took my breath away.

What is interesting is the fact that they can customize the kitchen according to your floor plan or your budget. The kitchen units come in high gloss acrylic finish, easy to clean and maintain. The flap doors for cabinets open so softly and close rather gently. Useful shelves in each unit and a clever use of every inch of space in swivel units to store jars, cans etc. reflected a terrific use of space. There were swivel-mounted add-on tables that double up as a work top table or a snack counter. Cabinets with folding doors again showed their focus on space saving techniques. These units offer enough space for built in appliances, be it the hobb, the microwave, dishwasher or even the toaster or mixie. I loved the unit where you could pull out a 14” TV from behind a mounted cabinet!
