Liu`s Waldorf

Liu`s Waldorf

On one fine day, as I was whizzing past I.I.T. towards Besant Nagar, I happened to notice this little restaurant-its name a tongue twister! It is located in between `Dollars and Pounds` and `Hot Chips`, past Madhya Kailash. It had been a while since I had good Chinese food , my previous experience at ?Wang`s Kitchen' being a bad one!

The arched and gaily decorated entrance looked very inviting, especially since I was very hungry and it was well past my lunch time, that I decided at the spur of the moment to check it out with my daughter. When we came closer to the place we noticed that the parking lot was rather small and cosy enough for the smaller cars and two wheelers. Luckily I had a driver with me and so did not have to bother too much about this aspect, which is rather troubling if one did think about it for other occasions. On the door, we noticed a board, which announces the working hours as ?11 am to 3pm and 6.30 to 11pm.

As we entered, we were graciously welcomed by the staff and offered a number of tables to settle in. We chose the one near the window. The decor isn`t too fancy, just about enough to indicate that it was Chinese (all the wall and ceiling hangings were for Feng shui) and a wall unit by one side which was decorated with laughing Buddhas, Toads etc., all the Chinese symbols for good appetite.

What caught our attention was the table mat. The table mat spoke of the various Chinese symbols associated with a specific year and their classification as per the Chinese calendar with a brief description of the group and which group to avoid or be friendly with. We were so busy analyzing ourselves based on these descriptions that we forgot to order the food and it was 2.30pm already! Yet the waiters did not rush us, but came over when we woke up to this fact, and politely took down the order.

Chinese tea or green tea is served in a kettle with two tiny cups with which to drink. The tea was wonderful and infact, my daughter preferred to have tea rather than Pepsi! We ordered Mixed Spring roll with a chicken corn soup and a wanton soup. The soups were good but guess we could have done without the spring rolls which were rather amateurish. A large bowl of soup which could be shared by all at a table could also be ordered especially by larger families (IF the people could arrive at a consensus).

The main course was a large plate of batter fried prawns and a vegetable fried rice. It was good, though the amount of black pepper powder on the fried rice could have been less especially on a hot sunny day. We did not think of having a dessert, as also the waiter did not ask..

We finished a satisfactory Chinese meal and then also made a few enquiries which I would like to share with you -The place has a home delivery service with 6% additional as service / delivery charges. They`ll deliver only in the areas nearby i.e. Adyar and few closer to Thiruvanmiyur
