Situated on Cathedral Road very close to Music Academy, Copper Chimney is a good restaurant to visit when you want to dine on specialty dishes from the north especially Mughlai food.
Copper Chimney is a nice name for a restaurant specializing in North Indian food. Having eaten at the Copper Chimney in Worli, Mumbai ages ago (one of those la di da places with some of Mumbai’s glitterati) I wanted to try out the restaurant in Chennai. Here the ambience, and the crowd is simpler and the atmosphere is cosier. Situated on Cathedral Road very close to Music Academy, Copper Chimney is a favourite restaurant to visit when you want to dine on specialty dishes form the north especially Mughlai food.
Most of the kebabs are succulent and tasty and add that first dash of enjoyment to the meal. We generally skip the Indian soups and go straight to the starters. The panner tikka and boti kebab are tasty. The green chutney which accompanies it is as tasty as it can get. The rumali rotis, parathas, naans and rotis are served steaming hot so they impart a lovely buttery fragrance. These so called Indian breads are excellent here and improve the taste of the side dishes like mutton rogan josh and butter chicken the ubiquitous North Indian dish almost always ordered here. Among vegetarian dishes the dal makhani and subz handi (vegetable dish) are a bit spicy but tasty. The malai kofta is one dish I like almost anywhere and it is very appetizing here. The biryani is tasty but not exceptional. There is a range of Indian desserts on offer and the Kulfi is good.
Copper chimney has a pleasant ambience and good service. The staff is polite and helpful and ever ready to recommend dishes. It is generally crowded so its better to make a reservation but the last time I visited it for lunch on a Saturday afternoon without a reservation we managed to get a table for three almost immediately. I have visited the restaurant a few times and every time the food has been excellent.

It is quite expensive and sometimes it’s a problem to find a parking slot as it is situated just below the flyover on Cathedral Road. However if you are willing to walk the extra mile for tasty north Indian food Copper Chimney is the place to visit.
