The Alliance Française of Madras, in collaboration with the University of Madras, Arangham Trust and Murugappa Chettiar Trust celebrate the 73rd birthday of His Holiness The Dalai Lama with a Tibetan Cultural Weekend On the 4th, 5th and the 6th of July 2008.

ALLIANCE Française
4th July, 11am University of Madras, Hall F-50

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Madras will inaugurate a speech and conference by Mr. Claude Arpi on the first foreign travelers to Tibet, particularly Alexandra David Neel.

The period between the mid-19th and the mid-20th century witnessed unknown war on the tracks of Central Asia and Tibet to grab new lands. Alexandra David-Neel’s numerous writings, translated in several languages, have contributed to make Tibet known the world over. This presentation will go in depth into the feats and motivations of David-Neel and her fellow explorers.

ALLIANCE Française Claude Arpi
French historian, journalist and writer

Claude Arpi is born in Angoulême, France, in 1949. His real quest started in 1972 with a journey to the Indian Himalayas. Since then he has been an enthusiastic student of the history of Tibet, China and the subcontinent. After graduating as a dental surgeon from Bordeaux University, France, he decided to come to India and settled in Auroville. Claude Arpi regularly writes on the geopolitics of the region, environment and Indo-French relations.

Alexandra David-Néel 1868-1969

Alexandra David-Néel was a Belgian-French explorer, spiritualist, Buddhist and writer, most known for her visit to Lhasa, Tibet, in 1924, when it was forbidden to foreigners. David-Néel wrote over 30 books about Eastern religion, philosophy, and her travels.

4th July 6.30pm at Alliance Auditorium
Himalaya, by Eric Valli
ALLIANCE Française

The film is a sort of western – a Tibetan western – a universal and timeless saga of power, pride and love. The extreme environment of the Himalayas is magnificently contrasted to the delicacy of humanity and the beauty of Tibetan culture. It was nominated for the Academy Awards 2000 in the Best Foreign Film Category.

ALLIANCE Française
